Are There Too Many Black Bears in New Jersey? 2010   20 comments

A large bear looks at us and is not afraidOn Fathers Day, 6/20/2010, in a neighborhood, Vernon, these “Three Bears” were on the front lawn of a house eating mulberries. They weren’t “three little bears” as you can see and the large male didn’t exactly look like he was worrying about being out there noontime where everyone could see him.

Just one empty lot away was four or five children, ages (4) to (7) playing in their front yard. Someone drove back to alert the parents but the children were already inside.

Sightings such as this have increased, reports of attacks on livestock and domestic pets as well. Two bears were recently shot by police for breaking into houses in Morris County.

Yet word has it that the anti’s are flooding the Governor’s office with letters attempting to once again stop the planned 2010 black bear management hunt.

We can only remain confident that Governor Christi, a no non-sense Governor that uses common sense has made a decision to support a hunt and will not be swayed by the misleading rhetoric and letters that falsely indicate a lack of support for the hunt.

These letters, carefully composed and sent by both the anti-hunting/animal right groups are much like the votes for American Idol. The host of that show is quick to note the millions of voters called in to vote, but fails to disclose that any person can vote as many times as they like. A person supporting a particular contestant can vote over and over again for that same person.

This year is it; the black bears are totally out of control because we have too many and not enough natural habitant to keep them within their own range. The majority of citizens in this state do support a black bear hunt as part of wildlife population management. That support was evident when the anti’s waged an all out campaign against candidate Christi because he voiced publicly his support of the black bear hunt. Now he is Governor Christi, made it into office without their support and can support this hunt because it is right, he knows it and owes nothing to anti’s that have been able to bring into play the threat of lost votes to other Governors.

The garbage argument; surely, black bears will find garbage, because there is not enough natural food to go around. And YES! Garbage should be properly contained, but garbage is not sperm needed for the black bears to propagate, it is just an attraction for overpopulated black bears. So as there is a need to contain garbage there is a need to reduce the number of black bears.

In this particular case there was no garbage just a good old fashioned mulberry tree. Ever see a mulberry tree or cherry tree for that matter, there is absolutely no way to clean them off the ground, like apples or pears and the one black bear was right up on the limbs of the mulberry tree picking them off.

There are no longer “black-bear experts” that can tell us that black bears are not dangerous, because this is a new year, a new time and a new black bear. No longer shy, no longer in fear of humans and not enough land to absorb the continued growth of their population. They are unpredictable at best and from killing livestock and domestic pets, breaking into garages and houses it is inevitable that a human is going to fall into harms way sooner or later.

We have a BP oil leak that is ruining the environment and economy, the people, Senators and Congress are blaming everyone back to President Regan, Bush and President Obama as well for letting things get to a point that a tragedy like this could take place.

Listen up, we in New Jersey have been warned, the Black Bear has warned us, like this brazen male on the lawn of a residence at 12 noon, take a good look at his face, NO FEAR, he is at the top of the food chain in our state, always was, but never knew it like he does today. So when a tragedy finally happens let’s be sure we made an attempt to avoid it, SUPPORT A BLACK BEAR HUNT NOW.

  1. Great post.

    Here is a video of a bear in my cherry tree. This video was shot in Ogdensburg. The damage was significant. Also, the hour was around 7:00 am. Fortunately this was on a weekend as the neighbor’s kid would have just been walking out to go to school no more than 50 feet away.

    Fans of Christie:

    I am confident that Chris Christie will get this hunt going in November even though Corzine before him had illegally overrode the state supreme court which had ALREADY RULED IN FAVOR of the hunt. Corzine’s action to block the hunt violated the court’s ruling.

    Thank God we now have Chris Christie.

    • What is fun about killing an innocent bear???

      How would you like the gun to be pointed at you?

      You are the one who is living in their turf

      • Dave, thank you for reading my blog. Hunting is a legal right for sport, game management and to harvest food. Did you get your rocks off by asking a nonsense question like; “how would we like a gun pointed at us”. Well here is a nonsense question for you; “how would you like to be a cow being shuttled into the slaughterhouse or a calf chained to a small shed so the muscles do not strengthen and spoil the “tender veal”?
        If you are sincere Dave, never touch a piece of meat, foul or fish again and donate your house to the state to make it available for wildlife. DOUBT IT.
        If you live in New Jersey you are on “their once turf”.

  2. Hi Martin, thank you for reading and responding to my blog and for sharing the video.
    I sure hope that Governor Christi does not allow the anti’s to delay this hunt. There is no way we can go past this year without the hunt, the black bear population is at “code-red”.
    We also need the millions of non-hunting public, that support hunting, to voice their support as well. In addition to the need for the hunt, we cannot allow the anti’s to pursue frivolous lawsuits because in addition to delaying the hunt the courts time comes from tax dollars.
    N.J. does not have spare tax dollars to waste on this issue, we have citizens losing jobs and homes.
    This is simple, just allow our professional, experienced F&G and wildlife biologists to do their jobs like they do in (26) other states successfully.

    • I am very confident that the hunt will take place in November.

      The factors that make me so very certain of this are as follows:

      1- We have Chris Christie
      2- We already have a State Supreme court ruling in our favor
      3- We have bear incidents that include:
      A- Home invasion
      B- Attacks on animals (pets and livestock)
      C- Attacks on humans

      November is an early hunt. I believe and I may be mistaken, the hunt when we had it was held in December. Do to the severity of bear related incidents, it will be November when it happens.

      The single thing working against us is Corsine stacking the game commission with activists instead of the traditional farmers and land management types. I am still unclear as to how they work and/or if they people get changed out with a new administration since they do serve at the whim of the governor.

  3. Hi Martin, thank you for your comments. I agree with you and hope they do hold the hunt in November as it would yield more results than December as part of the Whitetail Gun season.
    I am not so sure about the game commission being stacked with activists, I believe this commission is comprised of the correct people. The one important Governor appointed position is the head of the DEP and during Corzine’s administration we had the worst, his puppet Lisa Jackson.
    Hopefully the new comissioner will be open and aware of the problem and solution, as the (26) other commissioners in the states that need and use hunting as the major part of wildlife management control.

    • Corzine illegally overrode the state supreme court which ruled in favor of the hunt and strong armed the commissioner which serves at the whim of the governor.

      There was so much closed door chicanery going on that it leads me to believe that television stole the idea for BOSS HOG from Corzine.

      Believe me, Christie will put this right even with the hate-mail.

  4. I agree totally, Governor Christi will not be taken in by the handfull of anti’s and their lies. Especially since these same people clearly attempted to sway the public to stay with Corzine by placing articles and photo’s in the newspapers showing Christi with dead bears and captions like “this is what will happen to our bears if Christi is elected”.
    This was a good lesson for the anti’s, they are a “minority”, they lie and they have no concern for human safety.
    Anyone with a spec of common sense knows that there is no way possible for any wild animal to be left to multiply to whatever.

  5. WildNewJersey.tv, which is a daily wildlife news source, would like to run a pro-bear hunt story. Ideally the story will outline why a bear hunt is necessary in a way that can be easily understood by non-hunters and hunters alike.

    We recently ran a Sierra Club statement against the hunt, and would like to offer the opportunity to present both sides of the story.

    If any contributor would like to submit such an article, please email to wildnewjersey@edisonwetlands.org. Thank you & we enjoy the NJ Bear Hunt site!

    • Hi, thank you for reading my blog and for the info on your site. I would be happy to send you an oped that represents the “other-side” of the story. Everywhere I travel this year, more than any other year, the main topic of discussion is the sightings and safety concerns regarding the NJ BLACK BEAR OVERPOPULATION.
      The majority of our citizens always understood the need for wildlife management through hunting. What they did not realize is that our Fish&Game has been handcuffed by the previous administrations and political agendas have prevented from carrying out their work.
      Professional biologists have been challanged by anti-hunting/animal-right groups and their emotional rhetoric and misleading facts. Then these anti’s were supported by vote hungry, inexperienced politicians.
      Now we have a Governor that clearly understands the problem and will allow the “experts” to plan and carry out the proper course of action. A Governor that started out his campagin with a simple statement; “black bear hunt, YES. A Governor that was not seeking votes from anti’s and won this election without their support and “owes them nothing”. Finally a Governor that understands human safety trumps “wild” animal rights of being allowed to propagate to whatever numbers they can reach and now move within (21) NJ counties.
      Yes, I will be happy to send you an OPED in the hope that this will reach the millions of NJ citizens, mainly non-hunters that support hunting so they can become fully aware of the need to voice their opinion, they are the majority.
      Mike D

  6. hunting is the only way to control the numbers..people from other states like penna.laugh at us for letting tree huggers intimidate the fish and game…bears don’t even act the same when they are hunted..you don’t see them chasing kids foir tey’re lunches in the poconos…they know better…they must fear man..and hunting does that..

  7. Hi Steve, thank you for taking the time to read my blog and your very accurate comments.
    Yes, I have family living in PA and you are right they laugh not at our citizens but at the political mess we have wherein some no nothing politicians, looking to go with a flow of opinion that best supports what they think will garner the most votes, ignores professional biologists, human safety and plain common sense.
    Steve, just how smart does one have to be to understand that there is no possible way that any wild-animal, especially one at the top of the food chain, like the black bear can just be left multiply to whatever?
    Throw historical bear research out the window, this is a new bear in a new time and when overpopulated they are going to do “new” things. Breaking into houses is just the beginning.
    Let’s hope our Governor just stays the course.

  8. Here is my response to the Sierra crowd for one of their delusional posts. By the time you read this, I am sure they will have deleted it because those on the left are afraid of opposing points of view. For that reason, there is no point linking the post and so I will just show you what I wrote them.
    ~~~~~~~
    That was the most delusional and long-winded tripe to ever waste bandwidth on the internet.
    Your Disney view of the world would be cute from a five year old but from an adult, that kind of thinking is dangerous.
    You can not take ANY predator from the food chain and that is especially true of humans.
    What is next? Will you muzzle a lion to save a zebra? Will you put socks on an eagle’s talons to save a bunny? We did not claw our way to the top of the food chain just to eat tofu and kelp.
    Look at your teeth in the mirror assuming they have not all fallen out from the hippie crack you are smoking. Notice the canines? … CARNIVOROUS!
    As for your “NON-LETHAL” control methodologies, I strongly encourage you and people like you to go out in the woods and try to put a condom on a bear. May Darwin thin your hippie herds.
    I hand my garbage to the garbage-men in the morning, I have no pets and no bird-feeder so do not lecture me on my practices at home attracting bears. I have been putting up with property damage for years and this year, I am taking up bear hunting and I have every intention on putting an arrow into a bear. Also, I will shoot video of it and put it on Youtube just to watch ignorant saps like you flip out. I will take a portion of the meat for myself and feed the rest to the needy who go hungry and I will even cook it for them.
    Here is a bear destroying my cherry tree with vulnerable children right next door 20 feet away. I find the neighbors garbage in my yard all the time and my fence has been broken down. Are you going to clean up after YOU PRECIOUS WINNIE THE POO and repair my fence?! I think not.
    • Hi Martin, don’t know if my first reply went through so here it is again. The Sierra crowd is way off course please read my latest blog in response to them as well.
      Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and it is good to know that people like you are taking the time to give everyone another point of view. This was a great video and the photo on my blog of the large male black bear is similar, three bears had taken apart a mulberry tree, same as you right next door to a house where several children were playing and at noontime.
      Please write in whenever you have the time and I would be happy to post your information.
      Mike D
      • I was a little short with them but I have zero tolerance for people who place a greater value on animals than humans and in their ignorance cause more damage to the very animals they claim to help by disrupting the natural order.
        The “ANTIES” fail to grasp the simple fact that even without a hunt, bears are being put down by police and then the carcass goes to waste.
        If an animal becomes a threat, it will be put down anyway but only after it has done damage or killed somebody.
        Hunters care more about animals than non-hunters and that is fact.
